PS5 Controller Keeps Disconnecting — Every Cause Fixed (From Someone Who’s Seen It All)

If your PS5 controller keeps disconnecting, I want you to know something first.

This is not a sign that your controller is broken. It is not a sign that your PS5 is dying. In almost every case I have seen — and I have seen a lot of them — this is a fixable problem with a very specific cause.

At the gaming café I managed, the PS5 DualSense was the most complained about piece of hardware we had. Not because it was a bad controller. But because a few very common situations make it behave badly. Once you know what those situations are, the fix takes less than five minutes.

Let me walk you through exactly what causes this and what to do about it.

Why Do My PS5 Controllers Keep Disconnecting?

The most common reason is Bluetooth interference from your WiFi router.

Most routers broadcast on the 2.4GHz band by default. The PS5 DualSense also uses Bluetooth, which runs on a very similar frequency. When they clash, the controller loses its connection randomly — sometimes mid game, sometimes the moment you put it down for a few seconds.

The second most common reason is a controller that has not been updated. Sony pushes firmware updates for the DualSense regularly, and an outdated controller can behave unpredictably even with a brand new PS5.

The third reason is a degrading battery. This one catches people off guard. A controller with a weak battery will disconnect when it drops below a certain charge level, even if the battery indicator says it still has charge left.

There are a few other causes too, and I will cover all of them below.

How Do I Fix My Controller Constantly Disconnecting?

Work through these in order. Start with the first one, test your controller, and move to the next only if the problem continues. Most people find their fix within the first two steps.

Step 1. Switch Your Router to 5GHz

This is the fix that worked in our café more than any other single change.

Go into your PS5 network settings and disconnect from your current WiFi. Reconnect but this time select the 5GHz version of your network. It usually appears as the same name with a “5G” label at the end.

The 5GHz band does not interfere with Bluetooth the way 2.4GHz does. Once you switch, the random disconnections usually stop immediately.

If your router only shows one network name, log into your router settings and check if you can enable a separate 5GHz band. Most modern routers support it but keep it hidden by default.

Step 2. Update the DualSense Firmware

Connect your controller to the PS5 using the USB cable that came in the box. A third party cable will not always work for this.

Go to Settings, then Accessories, then Controllers, then DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software. If an update is available it will show here. Install it, let the controller restart, then test again.

This step alone has fixed disconnecting issues for a lot of people, especially if the problem started happening after a PS5 system update.

Step 3. Check Your USB Cable

A lot of people use cheap third party USB cables for charging. These cables often cannot handle the data connection the PS5 needs to recognise and sync the controller properly.

Try using only the official cable that came with your PS5. If you have lost it, buy a proper USB C cable rated for data transfer, not just charging.

If the controller works fine on the cable but disconnects the moment you go wireless, the cable is not the issue. Move to the next step.

Step 4. Reset the Controller

There is a small reset button on the back of the DualSense, near the Sony logo. It is a tiny hole. Use a SIM ejector pin or a straightened paperclip to press and hold it for five seconds.

After the reset, reconnect the controller to your PS5 using the USB cable. Press the PS button to pair it again.

This clears any corrupted pairing data that might be causing the disconnections.

Step 5. Turn Off HDMI Device Link

This one surprises people every time.

Go to Settings, then System, then HDMI, and turn off Enable HDMI Device Link.

This feature lets your TV and PS5 communicate automatically. Sometimes it tells the PS5 to turn off, which disconnects everything including your controller. Turning it off removes that conflict entirely.

Step 6. Clear Your PS5 Cache

Hold the power button on your PS5 until it beeps twice, then turn it off completely. Unplug the power cable from the back. Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on normally.

This clears the temporary cache on the PS5. It sounds simple but it genuinely fixes random disconnection issues that have no other obvious cause.

Step 7. Check the Controller Battery Health

If your controller is more than two years old and has been used heavily, the battery may have degraded to the point where it cannot hold a reliable charge.

There is no built in battery health tool on PS5, but the sign to look for is this: the controller disconnects when it drops below roughly 20 to 30 percent charge, even though the indicator shows it still has power. If this matches what you are experiencing, the battery is the issue.

You can have the battery replaced by a repair shop, or buy a new DualSense. Sony also offers a controller repair service in some regions.

How to Fix a PS5 Controller That Keeps Going Left?

This is a different problem to disconnecting, but it often gets reported at the same time.

If your controller keeps drifting left on its own, that is stick drift. It is a hardware issue with the left analog stick, not a software or connection problem.

The temporary fix is to go to Settings, then Accessories, then Controllers, and increase the stick deadzone. This tells the PS5 to ignore very small stick movements, which masks the drift.

The permanent fix is to clean around the base of the left stick with a small amount of electrical contact cleaner, or have the stick module replaced. We did this regularly at the café and it works well on controllers that are not too far gone.

If the stick is visibly loose or physically damaged, replacement is the better option.

Is There a Common Issue with PS5 Controllers?

Yes. The DualSense has two widely reported issues.

The first is stick drift, which I covered above. It affects the analog sticks and causes them to register movement when you are not touching them.

The second is Bluetooth range and interference sensitivity. The DualSense is more sensitive to wireless interference than older PlayStation controllers. This is why the 5GHz WiFi fix works so well — the controller is simply too close to a competing wireless signal.

Sony has acknowledged both issues. Controllers bought after mid 2022 have improved stick mechanisms that are more resistant to drift. If yours is older than that and showing problems, it may be worth considering a replacement.

Quick Diagnosis Table

What you are experiencing Most likely cause First thing to try
Disconnects randomly during gameplay WiFi interference Switch to 5GHz
Disconnects only on wireless, not USB Pairing or firmware issue Reset and update firmware
Disconnects when battery is low Weak battery Replace battery or controller
Disconnects when TV changes input HDMI Device Link Turn off HDMI Device Link
Disconnects after PS5 update Firmware mismatch Update DualSense firmware
Drifts left or right on its own Stick drift Clean or replace stick module

One Thing Worth Knowing Before You Buy a New Controller

At the café, we replaced controllers too quickly in the early days. A customer would report disconnecting, we would swap the controller, and the problem would come back within a week on the new one too.

The issue was always the router. Not the controller.

If you are about to order a replacement DualSense, try the 5GHz WiFi switch first. It takes thirty seconds and it has saved a lot of people a lot of money.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my PS5 controller keep disconnecting from my phone? When using Remote Play on a phone, the controller connects via Bluetooth to the phone rather than the PS5. Make sure your phone’s Bluetooth is not being interrupted by other devices, and keep the phone and controller within a metre of each other for the most stable connection.

Does a low battery cause PS5 controller disconnecting? Yes. A battery that has degraded over time will disconnect the controller when it drops below a certain level, even if the on screen indicator shows remaining charge. This is especially common on controllers that are two or more years old.

How do I stop my PS5 controller from disconnecting on PC? On PC the DualSense connects through either USB or Bluetooth. For Bluetooth on PC, make sure no other Bluetooth devices are competing for the same channel. The most reliable option for PC use is always a direct USB connection.

Can the PS5 itself cause controller disconnecting? Yes. If the PS5 system software has a bug or the cache has become corrupted, it can cause random controller drops. Clearing the cache by fully powering down the PS5 and unplugging it for 60 seconds usually resolves this.

Is PS5 controller disconnecting a warranty issue? If your controller is less than one year old and none of the fixes above work, contact Sony support. A controller with consistent disconnecting issues that cannot be resolved through software is covered under the standard warranty.

If your PS5 is also shutting down unexpectedly or running very hot, that is a separate problem worth looking at. I covered everything you need to know in my guide on PS5 overheating fixes — the causes and the solutions are completely different to what causes controller disconnecting.
